A party fit for the Romans! – St. John’s College

On Wednesday (14 December) Years 3 and 4 finished off their Roman and Celts History project, with a day of celebrations.

Throughout the morning pupils took part in a range of crafty activities. They made: Christmas mosaics, using coloured stickers to create a festive picture to take home; leaf headdresses, ready to wear to the roman party, and roman numeral bookmarks, a challenging task where the children had to write their date of birth in roman numerals, and then decorated with their favourite patterns and colours.

After lunch it was time for ‘Strictly Come Marching’ where, in their groups, pupils competed for the best Roman Emperor march!   The scores were collated before the children marched back to class for the Roman Quiz…

Earlier in the day pupils spent time researching and recapping on the work they have done over the term, to come up with a quiz question. Teams were quizzed on roman numerals, food, weapons and Rome amongst many other topics.  It was a closely contested game with all teams doing well to score so highly:

A huge thank you to all our Year 3 and 4 parents for providing a magnificent array of food for the Roman Feast.  We are also grateful for their help with the children’s amazing costumes, which made the day so memorable.

Years 3 and 4 have had an excellent time learning about the Romans and Celts and the children have thoroughly enjoyed their day of celebrations.

St. John’s College – Presentation of Michael Lane

The first meeting of the term saw almost a hundred people in the New Benildus Hall to listen to Michael Lane, who was elected as Hampshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner last May. He explained his role, which includes holding the Chief Constable to account, setting a budget for policing in the county and devising a plan to control crime and disorder.

All of this currently has to be done in the context of a tight financial allocation.

Nonetheless Michael emphasised his determination to find new ways of keeping people safe within these constraints – for example, replacing police stations with more flexible police response teams. He was supported by representatives of the Portsmouth police and Neighbourhood Watch, who also contributed to the debate.

St. John’s College – Junior Assembly

Today’s assembly focused on world leaders, as it is a very important day for America. Whether you are from England, America or the other side of the world, the face of Donald Trump can be recognised by millions due to the media coverage about the elections. By 12pm today America will have its 45thPresident enter the Whitehouse.

As Mr Shrubsall told the pupils about Donald Trump’s past, the Junior teaching staff were surprised about how much the children already knew, including what TV programme he hosted back in 2003; ‘The Apprentice USA’, what he had promised to do if he was elected president; Make America Safe, create a better economy, and to make America strong in every way; and his well-known catchphrase “make America great again”.

The children agreed that whether you supported Donald Trump or not, being President was an extremely hard job to do; in any country around the world. The pupils thought about all the world leaders who have to make difficult decisions to make our world a better place.

Boarders Weekend Activities Personal Skills Workshop – St. John’s College Southsea

The boarders enjoyed their first week back after the Christmas break and with the senior pupils going straight into their mock exams, it was a quiet week as they got their heads down and worked hard on their revision.

This weekend the boarders enjoyed a relaxing morning on Saturday; the U15 boys’ played Hockey against KES Witley, however due to the weather the rest of the matches were cancelled. The girls enjoyed a good training session in the Sports Hall instead of playing their planned fixture against LVS, Ascot. On Saturday evening, a group of 21 boarders went over to Gosport Leisure Centre to enjoy an hour and a half of exclusive use of their inflatable challenge in the swimming pool. It was a lovely evening for everyone and something that we will definitely do again.

On Sunday afternoon 60 boarders joined in with a ‘personal skills’ activity. They made their way around six different ‘stations’ in 90 minutes, focusing on developing their knowledge and skills in the following areas: car maintenance and repair, public speaking, kitchen hygiene, sewing, laundry and ironing and finally nutrition. It was lovely to see everyone engaging in the sessions and was interesting speaking to the boarders later in the evening and seeing how much they had taken on and retained! Hopefully, they will be able to put this new-found knowledge to good use in the future, especially if they head onto university or into the ‘Big wide world’.
